The birth of Bulletproof® butter coffee…
Several years ago a young American adventurer was trekking the Himalayan foothills of Tibet. Exhausted by his efforts, he stopped at a small village. The owner of the guest house recommended a traditional tonic which would quickly restore his wellbeing and even improve the power of his brain. The traveller was handed a cup and drank it. The warm drink was obviously some form of tea, but there was something different about it. His host told him that the uplifting brew was tea made with yak’s butter, and that it had been a traditional restorative in the region for centuries.
On returning to the States, the adventurer began researching butter beverages. Preferring coffee to tea, he set about devising a recipe for butter coffee. He tested many types of coffee and settled on one grown at high altitude in Central America. These single-source beans produce what is known as ‘upgraded coffee’, which is extremely low in toxins but retains high levels of performance.
Then came the butter.
It had to be made from the milk of grass-fed cows which contained none of the damaging casein proteins found in other milks. And it definitely had to be unsalted. With the addition of an extract of oils derived from coconuts and palm kernels, the recipe was born. The oils, sometimes referred to as ‘brain octane oils’, naturally contain medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) and have been proven to help in the process of excess calorie burning, the promotion of fat oxidisation and a reduction in appetite.
This butter coffee recipe was trademarked as Bulletproof® Coffee. Today, it fits in perfectly with the growing number of people who are turning to a low-carb, high-fat lifestyle which involves eating higher levels of certain fats, a moderate amount of protein and a low carbohydrate intake.
